なぜIT？
昔からITには興味がありましたが、若いころはその分野で働く機会がありませんでした。人と関わることが得意だったので、建設の仕事を始めて、すぐにマネージャーの立場になりました。 その後、ワーキングホリデーで日本に来て、英語の先生として働きました。それはとても良い経験でしたが、長く日本に住むうちに、やはり自分が本当にやりたいのはITの仕事とだと感じるようになりました。
それがきっかけで、本格的にITの道に進もうと決めました。もともと技術に関心があり、専門的に学びたいと思うようになりました。日本では大学の学位が重視されるときいていたので、RMIT大学のIT学科に入学して、しっかりした技術と知識を身につけようと考えました。
大学のとちゅうで新型コロナウイルスが始めた。突然すべての授業がオンラインになりました。それをきっかけに、日本から大学を卒業することに決めました。英語の先生としてフルタイムで働きながら、大学の勉強もフルタイムで続けました。とても大変でしたが、「努力すれば必ず成長できる」という実感がありました。
どうやってモチベーションを上げる？
学ぶプロセスが好きです。毎日少しずつ成長できる勉強があることが楽しいです。時間を大切に使って、目標を立てて、次の週に振り返ると、自分の成長が少し見える気がします。何時間もかけてバグを直したり、 昔のプロジェクトを見て「本当に上達したな」と感じたりすることもあります。 その進歩が、いつもモチベーションになっています。
勉強から本当のエンジニアへ
大学の最後の年に、働いていた会社のITサービスが少し古いと気づきました。練習のために新しく作り直したいと伝えたら、「いいよ」と言ってもらえました。それがチャンスになって、初めての本当のプロジェクトを作りました。 そのアプリは photobook-kids-up.app です。 最初は Python で作って、そのあと Node.js と React で作り直しました。企画から公開まで全部一人でやって、「自分でもできるんだ」と自信を持つことができました。 そのあと、もっと大きなプロジェクトにも参加して、他のデベロッパーと一緒に独自の学習管理システム（LMS） vision-up.app を開発しました。それで大きいバックエンドと開発ワークフローを学びました。 今も同じ会社でフリーランスとして働いていて、毎日少しずつ成長を感じています。今はこの道を選んで本当によかったと思っています。

Why did I choose to move into IT
I’d always wanted to work in IT, but I that opportunity just didn't really arise for me. I was good with people, so I started out in construction, where I eventually moved into a management role. When I came to Japan on a working holiday, teaching English was a great experience, but once I decided to stay long term, I knew I needed to build something more future-focused.
That’s when I started seriously considering a career in IT. I’d always been into tech, I built my own computers and tinkered with tech for years, so I enrolled in an IT degree at RMIT, knowing that formal training would help me build real skills and that it'd be respected in Japan.
About halfway through my degree, COVID hit and everything went online. I decided to move to Japan early and finish my studies remotely, working full time as a teacher while studying full-time. It was tough, but it proved how much I enjoy pushing myself to improve.
What keeps me motivated
I love the process of learning, having something concrete to improve at each day. I like structuring time, setting goals and getting a little better each week. There's something satisfying about solving a bug that took hours, or realizing how far you've come since the last project. A constant sense of progress is what has kept me motivated in this field.
Turning study into real work
In my final year of UNI, I noticed that some of my company’s services were outdated. I proposed rebuilding it. They gave me the chance, and it became my first production-level project: photobook-kids-up.app.
I first built it in python, then later rewrote it in Node.js and React, handling everything from planning to deployment. That project showed me that I could create something end to end and deliver value.
After that, I was promoted to work on a larger system, a custom learning management system (LMS) alongside another developer. That project helped me grow quickly, especially in backend development and deployment workflows.
Now I continue to work with the same company as a freelance developer while aiming to move into a more IT-focused environment. What started as self-doubt has become something I'm fully committed to, building and learning each day.
